At about this time every year there seems to be an over-abundance of trade shows, expos, and technical extravaganzas designed to introduce the newest, flashiest whiz-bang of our very near future.
There are many important reasons why our union participates in these various equipment showcases every year. We usually have a booth of our own and we take that opportunity to keep in touch with the members who are visiting the show as well as talk with potential members and producers who have questions.
In this months edition you will find a report on the activities at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) this past April in Las Vegas. We also report on the ICG Lighting Workshop held in March. CineGear is another important trade show and it happens this month.
Another reason for us to attend and participate in these seminars is to keep up to date on emerging and hybrid technology and to also learn about the pipe dreams that will become our reality to operate in the years to come.
The training that we participate in at those events goes beyond the more traditional lighting that we experienced in our Lighting Workshop this past March.
These equipment shows, conventions, forums and workshops are the best opportunity we may have to learn as much as we can, and to come together as fellow craftspeople. These are also the ideal situations to develop and maintain our relationships with the manufacturers and vendors that are essential to the work that we do.
Last, but not least, shows like this are an important way to spend time together, get to know each other and have an opportunity to talk about the issues that affect us. I have learned in my time as President, how important it is to spend time with each other. This is how we strengthen the bonds that make us a Union.
These shows and our training sessions happen all over the country. I hope to see as many of you as possible at this year’s Cinegear. I also hope to join you at as many of the events in other regions as possible so that we can begin to create a truly national local, The International Cinematographers Guild.
