In recent years, workflow has become one of the most discussed topics in HD production, especially tapeless capture. One of the leaders in data recorder technology, CODEX DIGITAL, exhibited their complete digital cinematography workflow—from digital HD2K4K acquisition, recording and storage, to editing, coloring and on-set VFX—all from a single Codex recorder in the back of a van. The British company also had their CODEX PORTABLE (due to ship in June 2008) on display, alongside a Sony F23. The size of a large toaster, the Portable offers dual-camera recording, a wide range of input formats from HD to 4K, removable RAID DiskPacks, high-speed networking and a built-in touchscreen interface.

S.TWO CORPORATION,
who has worked with director David Fincher on his last two Viper shot features, released the latest version of their digital Film Recorder, the DFR2K. The device records HD, HD 4:4:4, 2K and 3K data with built-in de-Bayering for live production of single sensor cameras. It is also the industry’s first recorder to be ARRIRAW T-Link certified. S.two also introduced the i.DOCK4 (4K data and HD RGB offline production ingest dock) and A.DOCK4 (4K data and HD RGB archive dock) to complement the DFR4K. When used with the DFR4K, D.MAG users capture uncompressed 4K images from digital cinematography cameras and move into editorial with i.DOCK4, which allows instant ingest to platforms such as Apple’s Final Cut Pro—for the fastest dailies turnaround time in the business.

On a smaller scale, but just as revolutionary, CONVERGENT DESIGN introduced a great new device for tapeless workflow, the FLASH XDR. The small device can capture HD-SDI output using a 4:2:2 full-raster (1920x1080) mpeg-2 codec at bit rates up to 160 mbps, which is four to six times that of HDV. The camera mountable, low power, sold-state design uses Compact Flash media to provide 2.4 hours of recording time (160 mbps) using four 48 gb cards. This fall, Flash XDR will offer an uncompressed 4:2:2 10-bit optional software upgrade.
